What is the fault when the lights on my aquarius flash?

My hotpoint aquarius washing machine is plugged in and put on the wash cycle.
The lights on the machine are flashing and the w/machine won't go on.
Can I do anything to rectify this without having to call out an engineer?

I know from my Aquarius that the lights flashing are a code that identifies the problem, hotpoint helpline did tell us what it meant, perhaps give them a ring & see if they will tell you.
