Boss Therm - BR1 receiver not receiving ?

I have a Boss Therm BR1 receiver and a BPS242RF stat. The batteries fell out of the stat and now they will not communicate to each other. I have tried to reset them but this doesn't seem to make any difference. I cannot find the manual to how to rest them to speak to each other. The green light has gone off on the receiver and it flashes red for a few seconds when I press the set button, but that is it.

Please help! It's cold outside!!

Here you go, NB: I've had bad units loose connection after 12 hrs again and again, its the unit if my reset procedure does not work, sorry but I made this fool proof, cheers Dave
Dave’s idiot Guide to re-programming the Boss BPS242RF Room Thermostat and other make ones of the same type:

Forward:
Don’t panic it’s easy to reset but follow the steps carefully and I’ve also wrote a quickie version at the bottom.

This thermostat comes in 2 parts

1: The receiver unit which is hardwired/connected to the boiler itself and this will be mounted close to the boiler (normally just under or to one side).

2: The remote thermostat/programmer which is usually mounted on the living room wall.

The receiver unit has 2 led lights on it. The top one should always be green. The lower one will turn amber when the thermostat talks to the receiver to turn the boiler on. When the amber light is on the boiler should be working.

If the top light is red there is a problem, normally for some reason the thermostat has lost its connection to the receiver.

1: Fit new batteries to the thermostat 2 x AA (located at the bottom of the thermostat unit). Does it now work and is the TOP light on the receiver unit green? If yes ok, job done, if not continue down the list.

2: Remove the thermostat unit from the wall by first partly removing the bottom small pozi screw (no need to fully remove). Pull the unit away from the wall bracket from the BOTTOM, if it does not come remove the screw some more. When it comes away at the bottom lift it off the top bracket hinges no need to use any force at all.

3: Take the unit to the boiler and make sure the front switches on the thermostat unit are set to AUTO & RUN

4: Turn the boiler off at the BOILER switch located on the BOILER and NOT the main power switch or you will turn the power off to the receiver also and you will fail.

5: You will see 2 buttons on the receiver unit.
1: the top one is called the Override button
2: the very small bottom one is called the learn button.

6: Press and HOLD the top ‘override’ button and at the SAME time press and HOLD the bottom ‘Learn’ button. You may need a pen to push the small ‘Learn’ button in. KEEP BOTH HELD IN FOR 4 SECONDS and you will see the top led light flash, release both buttons.

7: Next press & hold just the ‘learn’ button on the receiver for 2 seconds.

8: Next, on the rear of the thermostat unit there are 2 buttons.
1: =Test
2: = Learn
Press & HOLD the ‘learn’ button for 2 seconds (a pen maybe required once more). The 2 units should now be synchronizing; this will take 10-30 seconds. Give it time and do not press anything.

9: The led light on the receiver should now be GREEN. You’ve done it. Turn the boiler back on and all should be ok. Refit the thermostat unit by hooking the top of the unit back onto the top wall brackets and lowering the unit back onto the lower securing lug. Carefully tighten the bottom screw.

Quickie Guide
1 Ensure the thermostat unit is set to Auto and Run
2 Turn boiler off on the boiler switch not the main fused spur point.
3 Press both receiver buttons at the same time and hold for 4 seconds
4 Press just the learn button on the receiver and hold for 2 seconds
5 Press and hold the learn button on the thermostat for 2 seconds
6 wait between 10-30 seconds
7 Turn boiler back on.

First unscrew back plate off the heating transmitter so you can see both the TEST and LEARN buttons.

1. Ensure the transmitter is in Run and Auto mode. On the BR1 receiver press and release the SET button, this puts the receiver into learn mode.

2. Press and release LEARN button on the back of the transmitter.

3. Good signal is indicated by the LED flashing green, then solid on the BR1. No signal is indicated by the LED flashing red, then solid.

4. To test transmission press the TEST button on the transmitter. This will switch the relay on in the receiver irrespective of temperature. RF TEST appears in the transmitter display. To switch test off press TEST again.

5. Orange LED indicates relay is on (bottom right of Green LED on the BR1)

6. Pressing the RESET button for about 4 seconds will erase all ID codes in the receiver. The setup procedure has to be repeated to regain communication.

You're welcome :)

Ps.... make sure you use good quality batteries in the room theromostat, as it will start to play up (the whole system),as it will lose wifi connection, with the receiver in the loft.... and also put a sticky lable with the date of the batteries you use ,to let you know how long they last....

happy again

Thank you this forum ,and all forums like this. Forgot the basis and needed a reminder.... just take off the back of the room thermostat via the screw at the bottom. You have to press the learn button ,for at least 4 seconds,at the same time as pressing the communicate button on the wireless module. And bingo, all systems talk to each other, and all is well again.... Thanks again....

Happy again....

Thanks - we ( two people at once)tried this a good few times To be honest we tried pressing every button we could find and then replacing the batteries in the thermostat and pressing everything again - possibly including the combination given by other people. Eventually something worked. Also check the pressure gauge on the boiler in case that is below 1.5 bar. I have to say I have a VERY LOW OPINION OF THE DESIGNERS OF THIS SYSTEM (Boss therm / Siemens - shame on you) for producing something that seems like black magic and gives no clues or something as simple as a manual on / off. Warmth is now coming out of the radiators. Good luck and keep trying

Very much appreciated (and thanks) to all persons who supplied this information, whereby I managed to get the central heating working. I am normally inept at these sort of things, and very pleasing that persons put themselves out to share this information. Happy Xmas to all!

I had no red light, only flashed red when I pressed the set button. I followed the below instruction and it works. I found that the thermostats had to be set to auto for it to work. As others it took a few attempts before it worked.

The problem seems to occur after the electrics have been turned off for some reason or the batteries in the thermostat have been changed.
The BR1 then needs to be re-set. Follow John's instructions below.
All I would add is that on my one there was no red light on the BR1 unit. It took 4 attempts with the thermostast held against the BR1 unit before the green light started to flash, so don't give up if it does not work first time!

There isn't a red light on my reciever unless i press the set button and then it flashes for a bit but doesn't stay on or turn green. My thermostat screen went off yesterday and when i fiddled with it it came back on but the connection has stopped recieving. I have a 2 year old so it is important to get my heating back on or if you can recommend a company who will not over charge me please.

I recently replaced the batteries on my thermostats the other day the front display looks like it is working however I have had no heating since replacing these batteries, I presume this is not registering with the main controls, I have checked the back and no lights are coming from the test or learn lights, is this faulty ?

It took a little while and about five attempts but the solution below does work, even though no lights on the BR1 at all to begin with. Eventually they seemed to discover each other. Keep trying and you will get there.

The Receiver (BR1) has lost communication with the Sender Unit (Thermostat). To re-establish communications carry out the following.
1) Using a Phillips Cross Head screwdriver remove the back plate from the thermostat which will give access to 2 Buttons. LEARN & TEST.
2) Go to the Receiver (BR1) with the thermostat and a small screwdriver.
3) The BR1 will have a a RED light on.
4) Using the small screwdriver Press and keep Pressed the LEARN button until the GREEN light starts to flash on the BR1. With the LEARN still pressed, press the SET button (Not the Reset) on the BR1 and the light should go solid GREEN.
5) Prees the TEST button on the Thermostat and thats it, the system should be communicating again.
6) Replace the Thermostat back plate.

If this does not work and you don't have a steady red light on the receiver unit then it has a fault, at the boiler you can disconnect the receiver unit wires and insulate with electrical tape, then put a direct link in between the two switch connections with one piece of wire, this will allow the timer control to be used until you can replace the faulty receiver

I have a Bosch Therm BR1 receiver and a BRTRF digital room thermostat. The mains power to the house was turned off for about 30 minutes whilst a new electricity meter was fitted. When the mains power was turned back on the the two lights on the BR1 receiver remained off and now the thermostat and receiver will not communicate with each other. I have tried to reset the receiver but the orange light (top) flashes for about 5 seconds and the goes off. Help>
