how to tell if my clutch needs replacing?

my ford transit swb 2.5d v-plate (manual) is very hard to change gear the clutch pedal feels only slightly easier to push down and the engine has a slight over rev in some gears i have noticed a small leak of oil from behind the sump on the floor and also a whir/clicking noise from behind speedometer/instrument panel (possibley a cable to clutch housing im not sure if any connection to problem)what checks can i do before assuming it is the clutch that needs replacing

to find out if your clutch needs replaced find a hill on a quiet road stop pull your handbrake and sit with the van in neutral slowly pull away in 1st gear if problems pulling away clutch needs replaced

Firstly they never did a FWD on this van.

The clicking noise is the clutch adjuster on the pedal, it will have worn to excess and will require a replacement, it is an auto adjuster so once replaced should take up the slack and the clutch should be fine.

i assume this is a FWD. if so check the clutch master cylinder for leaks also check the slave cylinder on the gearbox before condeming clutch. if its RWD check pedal ratchet and cable for wear, damage or restriction.. should it be of hydraulic type, the as above!! hope this is usefull!!
