how to manage a process in task manager?

I run a Windows 7 computer and am having trouble getting my browser to exit when I shut the browser. It remains in processes and I have to go to task manager and end the Firefox process to make it exit so I can reopen it. Anyone know hoe to get it to exit like the rest of the processes do?
