How can I fix my Vax Turbo Force 2000 Power Pet vacuum cleaner?

The height adjustment on my Vax vacuum cleaner has stuck at the highest level so is too high to draw in any dust. You can still push the button around to the different height levels, but the hoover remains at the same height. Any ideas how to fix it?
