If the battery is more than 6 or 7 years old the chances are you need a new one.
If the car has done a really high mileage then the chances are the alternator is on its last legs. However, if it is not charging your battery there should be a red warning light on your dash.
The cooler autumn mornings tend to sort out those batteries that are past their best.
