electric failure?

while driving.total electric failure, noisy tappets, battery light on dashboard,will only bump start, had new starter motor fitted citroen burlingo 19 TD

use a volt meter,connect to battery terminals,set meter on dc settings,rev engine,if you dont get between 12.5 to 13.5 volts the alternator is faulty,if fan belt not snapped
