2003 megane 1.6 16valve engine dies when warm ?

i have been given a megane to look at for a friend the trouble is when the engine has been running for a while ..it loses power ..rev counter drops to 1000 rpm and sometimes dies completely .. no lights on dash and when it's cold it runs 100% .. any ideas guys??
