How do I remove the carriage handle from Russell Hobbs 9376 toaster?

I want to check the magnetic plate and can't get into the toaster without taking off the handle and temperature control dial. The carriage handle won't stay down and it was suggested that there may be crumbs interfering with the magnet. Don't want to force and break the handle. Any help would be appreciated.
