renault megane 1.6 petrol no water?

engine cut out the other night so i called the AA and the man said the the coolant header tank was empty.
i did notice that the temp gauge went up quicker than normal but cant say i noticed the engine over heat.
if gasket has blown what is the rough cost to get it fixed.
help
