98 Toyota Corolla VE ignition switch 2 HOT 2 touch!!! HELP!!?

My 98 Toyota Corolla VE was recently broken into. Looked as though nothing was missing or wrong until I noticed the ignition switch getting so hot that I couldn't touch it to turn the engine off without using a towel. Also my car will intermittently go dead while sitting at a red light. I'm now guessing they tried to hot wire my car although I SEE no evidence. What will it take to fix this?? I'm a single parent on a budget. HELP!!!

Unfortunately this is an un-avoidable garage job or call in a mobile auto electrician that might work out cheaper.

If you car is insured fire and theft surely you can make a claim of attempted theft. Something seems to be shorting and not blowing a fuse.
