Not being funny gents thanks for your help, haven't replied to date because I am so annoyed and frustrated with myself, the problem was found by re-addressing the wiring, problem solved in first sensor that I replaced - yes a loose terminal fitting. The language for the last few days has been electric.
cheers.

the 9800 as I said is a very good panel and very reliable recheck your connections in the beams ,and do a walk test it should read c1 not just 1 on the display on walk test all the zones will reveal themselves ,take note of what on what zone I mean logic states if the system was ok before you replaced beams ,then you must have done something wrong

Yes the system was working before I commenced my handy work, simply decided to change the sensors for cosmetic reasons they must be 20yrs + old. The number 1 comes up on the panel screen, the red light is illuminated showing fault and the red light to the left of letter A flashes. Am now about to take your advice gts and google the the instruction book

Don't bother with the immunity setting at this stage, set all sensor pulse width jumpers to position 1,(pet immunity off),replace covers then do a walk test as gts has said.

If the panel does register all zones on walk test then check the zone attributes in programming, ensuring it hasn't been programmed for double knock.

You still haven't answered gts's question: "did it work ok before you changed the sensors", or words to that affect.

Use the add answer form below, less confusing if one sticks to one post.

key in your pin number open front door see if it shows up on the panel front door norm on c1 =circuit one ,if that's ok reset panel then key in pin again press 9 the small red dots will jump to the middle of the display and stay there, now get some one to walk around the house and trip each sensor while you stay at the keypad,as they trip each sensor the panel should show the zone number for each one try it and get back to me
