You don't say if you have the sidelights switched on. If they are on then your car has a dim/dip feature. That is to say when the sidelights are on and you start the car the headlights will come on. This is to stop you driving on just side lights. Check your lighting switch. Why is it a nightmare? Volvos and Saabs do it all the time.
