How to fix a surge protector that popped, US plugged into Europe outlet?

I have a Dynex 11-Outlet PC Home/Office surge protector (DX114241) that I brought to Germany and it was plugged into a wall outlet using an adapter. The adapter was not a converter. The protector popped and smoked when brought back to me and wouldn't turn back on even plugging into US outlets. Is there a way to open and test for the issue, possibly replace the component?
I'm not familiar with electronics and the terminology, so as layman as you can get please.
