Maybe the drivers door solenoid has failed.
Maybe the wiring to the solenoid has failed (Especially where it flexes near the door hinge)

You would do well finding a Rover enthusiasts forum. This problem must have come up before.

Maybe do a Google search for - say - "Rover 45 door lock" and see what comes up.
