Ford Ka active 2018 Rain water getting in?

Ford Ka active 2018 How is rain water getting into where spare wheel is kept?

Rainwater entering the spare wheel well of a 2018 Ford Ka+ (including Active models) is a known issue, often caused by water getting trapped behind the rear bumper, failing taillight seals, or cracked sealant under the roof rails. The water typically accumulates behind the rear bumper vents or tail lights and trickles down into the spare wheel recess, often soaking the sound-deadening materials first.
Here are the most common causes and how they allow water in:
1. Rear Air Vent Leaks (Most Common)
The Cause: Behind the rear bumper, there are plastic air pressure vents (designed to relieve pressure when you close the doors). The sealant around these vents degrades, allowing water kicked up by the rear wheels to enter the boot cavity.
Fix: Remove the rear bumper, remove the vents, clean the area, and apply a high-quality silicone sealant around the vent holes before refitting.
2. Tail Light Gaskets/Seals
The Cause: The foam gaskets on the rear light clusters perish or shrink, allowing water to leak into the rear corners of the boot and flow into the spare wheel well.
Fix: Remove the rear light units and replace the gasket seals or apply a bead of silicone sealant around them.
3. Roof Rail Sealant Cracks
The Cause: The seam sealant under the black trim strips (roof rails) can crack with age, allowing water to travel down the rear pillars and into the boot area.
Fix: Remove the roof rail trim, clean the area, and apply a new sealant (like CT1) along the body seam.
4. Blocked Drainage
The Cause: Debris can block the drainage channels around the boot, leaving nowhere for rain to go.
Fix: Clear any dirt from the rubber seals and drain channels.
5. Tailgate Seal or Wiring Grommet
The Cause: The main rubber boot seal may be damaged or not creating a tight seal. Additionally, the rubber grommet where the wiring goes from the roof into the tailgate can leak.
How to Diagnose:
Remove the boot trim: Take out the rear carpeting and side trim panels to expose the metal work.
The Hose Test: Have someone sit in the boot with a torch while you run a hose over the back of the car (roof, taillights, spoiler) to pinpoint the exact entry point.
Check for blocked drain plugs: Sometimes removing the rubber drain plugs at the very bottom of the spare wheel well can help drain the water, though this doesn't fix the source of the leak.
