Line up the one of arrows with the one string hold and get a screwdriver wedge it in between the outer housing and the spool to pry it out. I tried the other method, but turning it and turning it but it didn't work so I got rough with it.

There should be one or two arrows or marks on the spool end. Align one with the string hole, then pull. To turn the spool, hold the outer casing with one hand, and twist the "button". You will need to push in sometimes to keep turning it.
