automatic transmission will not engage?

3 yr Craftsman 18.5 917.273821. Was workng fine and while mowing the the mower stopped moving. The shifter moves very freely and make no noise and the mower doesn't move. With it running and shifter engaged, it does move forward when tension is applied to the belt. What do you suggest?
