zanussi aquacycle 1250 (FLS 1383 W) drum will not turn?

I suspect this will be the drum bearing gone. I've had this twice now on my 3 yr old machine - it seems to be a weakness.
Also - unlike most machines - the bearing is integral with the rear half of the tub so that has to be replaced as well apparently, though a local guy did replace the bearing alone after a lot of cobbling as the Zanussi service people were all for writing the machine off as an uneconomic repair. They quoted about £150.
Was it screeching or rumbling on spin before it seized?
