Observation followup: I opened up the mp3 player and removed the battery. I applied 5V where the battery was removed. The Error 41 problem persisted. I then applied the same 5V source via the USB port and the player worked reasonably well. I'm interpretting this to mean that a new battery won't help.
The error 41 that I am speaking of occurs when forwarding/reversing to the next song on a no-name "2nd gen" nano look-alike.

Just an observation. In my case, when I'm connected to the PC with a USB cable, the error(41) goes away or becomes rare (after hoding down the menu key). This isn't a solution, but maybe this hints at a power/grounding issue? In my case, error 41 normally occurs when clicking to advance to the next song.
