I had the same problem with my 600x... I replaced the sub card and now it works flawlessly!

when it loads up press esc and then when the next screen comes up press f1

Error code 8611 on IBM thinkpad 600x laptop is System bus error-I/F. As explained in www.lenovo.com. It could be any of these in this order:
1. Reseat the keyboard cable on the sub card
2. Keyboard
3. External mouse
4. Sub card
5. Systen board
