Finalizing DVD+R disc?

I have a DVD recorder in the +R format which seems to only finalize a disc when it feels like it!! I push the appropriate button & it will say it's "Done" but then the option to finalize is still open. I try it again & it does the same thing. Yet another random disc will be finalized properly & playable in my DVD player. It's sooooo frustrating!!! Is this a sign that the recorder is crapping out or that the discs are faulty?
