cassette player will not accept tapes?

I have a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker. I have usually had a cassette adapter hooked up to my personal cd player, but recently, the cassette player hasn't been accepting the adapter, nor has it been accepting normal cassette tapes. I was wondering if this was a simple fixable problem or if it would just be worth it to get a cd player installed.
