Betta Windscreens answer is correct - I had exactly the same problem with my 2004 Clio and it was driving me nuts. It is a bit tricky and you need double jointed fingers and cant be too keen on the skin on your knuckles while removing & replacing the 16 or so bolts from sunroof frame. My only advise is to stress the point to make sure the old perished seal has been completley removed and cleaned up on the frame and the roof of your car, and then go to town with the silicone sealant - whatever spreads out can be cleaned up easy enough. I cant believe this is such a common problem for relativily new cars, Renault should offer this repair FOC as this is a clear design / material fault.

Cheers,

Peter

BETTA WINDSCREENS CLIO 98/05
SUNROOF REPAIRS
Betta Windscreens Stockport Repairs to Renault Clio 98/05 Sunroof
Repair of a sunroof on a Renault clio can be carried out by anyone who likes a bit off a challenge
Tools Needed are ;
• one 10 mm
• ratchet spanner
• one sealer gun
• tube of silicone sealer clear or black is best one
• bottle of white sprit
• old rags to clean up
• glass cleaner
• latex gloves
• bog spreader/plastic card

Lets start, as sunroof fitters we are aware there is a big problem with the Sunroofs in clios so were going to help you fix it. Starting in the driver seat, open the handle on a manual roof, behind the handle you will see the joint in the trim which holds the headlining to the roof. Take hold of the trim by the joint, pull forward and remove the trim. Once the trim is removed the headlining can be pulled down slightly to reveal the 10mm bolts. The housing unit which contains the light is not fixed by screws and can just be pulled down in one complete unit. By holding the head lining down approximately 4 - 5 inches the 10mm ratchet spanner can be used to remove the bolts which hold the lower frame to the upper frame. Once all bolts are removed the sunroof drain pipes which are located in the 2 front corners need to be pushed forward to separate them from the sunroof frame. Once this is achieved the sunroof can now be lifted out starting from the back. Once the sunroof has been removed from the vehicle glass side down you will find that the roof was fitted with a damning tape from the factory, once you have found this you have now found the problem. Remove the damning tape with a flat headed screw driver. Clean the back with white spirits, wait for the spirit to evaporate. Whilst the spirit is evaporating the roof needs to be cleaned any damning tape which is stuck to the roof should be removed. Once dry then we can apply the silicone sealer to the upper frame of the sunroof. Don’t be shy when applying sealant i recommend going round twice. Using a pair of latex gloves pick up the sunroof and replace into position make sure that the sunroof is sat correctly remove gloves enter the car and begin to replace the 10mm bolts. Once all bolts are fully tightened the pipes which are located at the front can be reconnected. The headlining trim can now be put back and the interior light calving can now be pushed back into position. From the outside of the vehicle all excess sealer can be removed with a bog spreader or a plastic card. Do not use a metal scraper as this can scratch the roof. Once excess sealer has been removed using a rag and white spirit clean off the remainder the sealer once this has been achieved spray glass cleaner on glass and paint work and polish up. Job well done.
NOTES
Do not carry out work on a warm day because by the time you have got all the bolts back into the sunroof the sealer will be semi set and this will be hard to remove.
If you are in the Stockport/Greater Manchester area and feel that you are unable to carry out this work we would be happy to carry out this work on your behalf. Price as follows;

Hiya mate, my Mums clio is the same, I seem to have fixed it though. If you notice when you put the sunroof back on, you will see where the 'tabs' of the 'sunroof' go into the car, there are holes going directly going into the car, if you take the surround of in the car and slightly pull down on the headlining you will the holes, I simply just put silicone on, you can' smooth off' with your finger from underneath, bearing in mind when you put the sunroof back on it stil maybe tacky and may disturb the silicone,so smooth off again when sunroof is in situe. Also there are 10mm SQUARE holes, not round they are the drain holes, the SQUARE holes go directly into the car aswell, I just filled them with silicone, it's seemed to have done the trick. Before I took the sunnroof off and studied it I could have safe the 'old dear' 40 quid on a seal off ebay, but I thought the seal had fatiged anyway, but there is a plus out of this.....its seemed to have lost its 'rattle'.I hope you can understand that, hope it works?!

Jon

Betta windscreens answer spot on. I would add that I noticed two more seals in the frame. They are where the water collects before going down the tubes. If you got as far as taking the frame out these will not be a problem for you.

Hi All,

I have a Clio 2005 with a manual sunroof and the water was coming in through the sunroof down the "A" Posts and "B" Posts, tried fixing it myself but still leaked. I found a company called Roc Solutions based in Poynton Cheshire who are also mobile and they fixed the sunroof for me for £80, the guy is called Steve on 07906164154, good luck........

I have a 2004 Clio, and I have recently experienced the same problems. I have, like others, tried to find the leak by pouring water over it, but to no avail. The main problem incurred by this poor sunroof is the smell the leak causes, probably due to stagnant water, has anyone else experienced this nasty stench?

Betta Windsrceens Stockport have been repairing sunroofs for 30 years. What i will tell you is both the mk1 and mk2 clios have a problem with the sunroofs.
The sunroof needs to be taken out cleaned damming seal on frame removed and fitted back with silicone sealer excess sealer clean of with white sprite no need to remove head lineing if fitted with 10 mm bolts use a ratchet spanner. Mk1 clios also leak from the arial remove and reseal. And mk1 & mk2 have a problem with the bulk head filling up with water. Open bonnet on the back of the bulk head is a hose about 6 inches long which gets blocked un block and the water can drain like it did the day the car left the factory. bettabob

i have just fixed my sunroof!! it is the seal between roof and the underside of the sunroof. the original seal is just like the draft excluder you stick round door edges. I removed the sunroof completely and re fitted it with a new fitting kit. basicly the same as standard seal but fitted with care and attention. after fitting i jet washed my sunroof for ten mins and it was bone dry. problem solved. Pennys to fix but taking the headlining out is prob the hardest part.

I had a clio that leaked through the sunroof too. It use to drip through where the sun visor is and onto the seat. Quite heavily in bad rain. We cleared the drains, had the whole sunroof out and back in again and changed all the sunroof seals to no avail, it just kept leaking.
In my opinion Clio's with sunroofs are a waste of space and I personally wouldn't want another one if they were giving them away for free.

Apparently it's due to a failed seal between the roof and the underside of the sunroof. I sorted mine by putting a sliver of clear superflex all around the small gap between he black sunroof edge and the roof. You can hardly see the repair. I only paid &2.50 for the sealant from screwfix, here’s the address:
