Undo the needle clamp, put the needle in making sure it is the correct way round, if your bobbin goes in the front the flat side goes to the back, if the bobbin goes in the side the flat side of the needle goes to the left, if you have a drop in bobbin and the slide plate opens towards you the flat side of the needle goes to the back.
