I found that a £2.19 strap wrench from a cheapo DIY shop was the only thing I could use to get enough purchase on the glass. Its a rubber strap (for grip) on a plastic self tightening handle (for leverage).

they can be very tight and you have to turn anticlockwise as you stated.make sure you don't turn the bulb holder round instead of glass cover as this could damage wiring
