Replace bottom plate and belt on Kenmore canister vac Model 116 50512003?

I have a broken bottom plate underneath the power sweeping head on a Sears Kenmore canister vacuum. Do you know how to remove the bottom plate without damaging the upper housing? I believe it is the same plate that needs to be removed to replace a broken belt in the power head.
