Stylus toliet-how do i get the lid off?

The toilet is filling with water and draining extremely slowly when flushed and there are bits of paper still left in there. I am trying to get the lid off and with previous toilets I have just unscrewed the ring around the flushing button but this doesn't seem to want to come undone. Any ideas of what the problem would be and how to get the lid off

I failed the intelligence test too - and I'm an engineer and designer. Now I know to push one button down and lift the second while the first is down. Thanks for posting this info.

Had the same problem this morning, flush would not stop and both buttons were jammed down.
I used the plastic sheet technique inserting around the buttons it helped me prise them back up.
It would seem that the flush buttons need to be floating in their assembly to stop this jamming.
Do Stylus employ the same method of connection or have they changed the design to stop this obvious fault on their new cisterns.

The engineering idiot who designed this lid securing method should be banned from ever designing anything again.

OMG I am an engineer and it took me longer than any good housewife to find this answer!

Thanks everyone now I can sleep in peace after my wife's nocturnal ablutions.

I have finally found a proper answer to the same questions. I thought I was daily an intelligence test as well. A degree in engineering does not help.
Thanks for the assistance.

Trouble with the screwdriver trick is that you can break the clips that prevent the buttons from coming out. A better idea is to cut a 10cm x 4cm piece of clear flexible plastic like from a shirt box, make a cylidrical shape and slide it down around the 2 buttons - push one down first. This releases the button clips and the buttons can be just pulled out.

Thank goodness for your answers! We had the same problem over Easter and were not willing to call an emergency plumber, we thought the problem would be easy to correct (which it was) but had so much trouble working out how to get the lid off! Simple once you have been told how. Thank you.

Len is absolutely. Pop up the two flush buttons and there is a big screw to undo then the top comes off.
Had the same problem after I bought it and was sure that getting the top off was some sort of perverse intelligent test. I had to ask Stylus

If the ring surround doesn't unscrew, then you can try to lever up the two flushing buttons with a fine blade screwdriver.

They may be a push fit on two plastic posts. Once off, they reveal a screw between them. Release this to remove the cistern lid. Make a note of the position of the buttons as they only fit one way round.
