The display light still remains on, even if the ignition key is out?

I had a new battery replaced and since then, the background/dispaly light of the Beta radio remains on constantly, even when the ignition key has been removed. I have had the electrics checked out by a VW garage and they could not solve the problem - but said it was the fault of the radio and I needed a new one!!
Has anyone got any suggestions?
