camera switches itself off straight after switching it on?

my vivitar 6.0 mega pixel vivicam6324 switches itself off as soon as I switch it on.Tried changing batteries.Really dissapointed as its only just over year old,very good condition(apart from that problem)still has protective film over screen.took it to camera shop said unable to repair.Any ideas on what to try?

I have exactly the same problem with my girlfriends camera. I may take it to pieces later and see if there's anything amiss. Is it possible that yours got wet?? We were out in the snow the day it started playing up, so maybe water got in somewhere, though we think it unlikely
