Try a hot iron sole plate cleaner such as Dritz iron cleaner or rowenta sole plate cleaner.

If your iron has a stainless steel bottom, then clean it with a Brillo pad or some other steel wool pad. I recently fouled the glide plate on mine while using garment glue, and this restored it to working perfectly.
