The Briggs 28D707 was made with two different stators.
One was DC only and the other was a Dual Circuit alternator.
The Dual Circuit uses an in-line diode as a rectifier. It you hooked it up without the diode, you may have cooked the stator. Murray was recently bought by Briggs, and due to the transition, Murray support is hard to come by.
