thread breaks with free motion quilting?

I recently got a great used Pfaff Creative 1471. I finished piecing my quilt and have been anxious to start my first free motion quilting with the 1471. BUT, I'm so discouraged. The top thread keeps breaking after a very short time of sewing. I've changed the tension and the thread, but nothing helps. HELP!!!!!

Hi there I have just started free-motion quilting on a Pfaff Performance 2058 & my thread keeps breaking too! What type of thread are you using? I am using a lovely silk one, but am going to swap over to a heavier machine quilting thread to see if that makes any difference

There is a definite art in free hand, you need the material very taught and the tension has to be perfect.
