What could the problem be with my 1985 corolla ?

I pulled up at a set of lights, and everything was fine, until I went to take off, then the car coughed and stopped. The engine still turned over but wouldn't fire.
I am getting plenty of fuel to the carby and strong spark, but it won't start. any idea what the problem might be.
