Hi, there are normally two temp sensors one for the guage on the dash and another that supplies the ecu, on some vehicles this is not a water temp sensor but a cylinder head temp sensor, with you having cold starting problems it would indicate that the temp sensor is giving the wrong info to the ecu so giving the wrong fueling schedule for cold starting

hi .have put car on dio machine. it told me it had over heating prob.not right pulled trailer with 4x4 on back 8o miles, engine temp fine.?

Hi Maurice, the ecu has gone into protective limp home mode due to a failed sensor or valve, to find the cause you will have to get it connected up to a diagnostic code reader to find the reason, £20~30 most good independant garages and tyre & exhaust places
