Was the repairman truthful about my refrigerator?

I have an amana refrigerator with a freezer on the bottom and the freezer went out. I was told that the freon has run out. Also that the oil gets so thick and disgusting that all the tubing would have to be replaced. Only 3 mo guarantee on work and was told that in 1 yr I would be calling again for service again. My refrigerator is only 8yrs old. Because the freezer is not working properly it is using a lot of energy also.
