whirlpool dishwasher adp 905?

Door wont lock onto latch; seems to have both connecting parts; releases straight away; I thought might be an alignment problem ( do they need adjusting ? ) Door will stay in upright position but there is a gap at the top of the Dishwasher were its open about an inch
