Buy or borrow an electrical multi-meter.
Use AC Volts to see how far the power gets and the continuity range to check any switches - with the machine unplugged of course.
The fault may indeed be switch related but it might also be the motor. I would still put money on it being a nicked cable having cut several myself over the years.
