Singer Sewing Machine model 427?

We have been given an old singer sewing machine. When we took the casing off the internal components were covered in a black soot like substance, it doesn't smell burnt and the machine is working I was wondering if someone could tell me what the substance might otherwise be. If it is 'fire' related what could burn inside the machine?

My singer 427 works but the bobbin doesn’t spin for the needle to catch the bobbin thread?pls I need help

Hello Shaun,
The 427 wa one of my favourite machines, whereabouts is the black soot like substance, I think it may be a gear that has disintigrated, there is nothing really to burn out on the machine itself, did you take the bottom off the machine?
