WindowsXP will not load Medion 2.66mb intel processor?

When I switch on my computer the start up page with the F1 & Del option comes up then changes to loading data down to primary set up, then comes up with the following."We appologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully.A recent hardware or softwarechange may have caused this.If your computer stopped responding,re-started unexpectedly or was automatically shut down to protect files or folders choose last known configuration to re start to the most recent settings that worked.If a previous start up attempt was interupted due to power failiure or power or reset button pressed or not sure what caused problem choose start windows normally."
(a) Safe mode
(b)Safe mode with networking
(c)Safe mode with command prompt
(d)Last known good configuration that worked
(e)Start windows normally
If I select a or b then the computer starts as on switch on & comes up with the above message.If I select c d or e it starts up as normal but a white bar
with black vertical lines & goes to error message.How
do I get windows to load,or if I re load windows from the recovery disk supplied would I lose any data stored on the computer?I have not loaded any software or added any hardware or had a power cut.
Computer is 5 years old,& was working fine.
