how to get the cistern lid off a Gala toilet?

the close coupled cistern has two flushing buttons on the top of the lid, housed in a circular plastic collar. Some or all need to be removed to gain access to the lid fixing screw - but how - without breaking it ? !

I just had a problem with my Gala toilet. The water wouldn't stop coming into the toilet after it was flushed even after attempting to press the buttons several times it wouldn't stop. As the person above said you have to remove the two flushing buttons and a large philips headed screw is underneath them this is what attaches the flushing buttons to the main unit inside the systern. The buttons are removed one by one and the casing doesn't have to be touched as now you can unscrew the large screw. The problem with me was that the unit inside had moved and was not sitting in the correct position. Once I turned it slightly it fell back into place and then I just had to reasemble the buttons etc. I hope this information is of use to someone. Also for some reason tightening the screw fully caused the water to start to flow into the toilet so I have had to loosen the screw until the water stops once filled. I don't really think that this is correct but it seems to work for me.

I have a Gala cysteine with the twin top buttoned. These keep "popping out". In the UK we have a similar Ideal Standard cistern. Does anyone know whether the push down buttons are interchangable.

I don't have a problem removing the lid BUT... l have a Gala Model TOP toilet cistern purchased in 2005 which needed a new expensive mechanism replacement within just two years. On receipt of this special order part it was completely diifferent from the original and Gala service dept. confirmed that it was a better design than the original. This has also failed within 3 years and l wonder why this is happening. We have 3 bathrooms for just two people in our Spanish home so it has not failed for over-use. Anyone else had this problem after such a short period.

Thanks Bob ! I have a Gala toilet and yesterday it emptied and wouldn't fill, kept running all night as I couldn't find how to get the cistern lid off. Easy when it's explained. Turned out the float was crusted with lime/calc. and wouldn't slide up and down freely. Quick clean down with anti-calc and all is fine again now. Good website this !

Thanks Bob, now the problem is how to dismantle the flushing tube to locate the washer that obviously needs replacing to cure the constant dribble of water that is running into the pan. Can you help with that problem ?

I have a Gala toilet and had the same problem. You need to pull the two buttons out ( push one down to allow you to get a hold on the other). You will then see a large crosshead screw underneath that you undo and that lets you lift the cistern lid off.
