Mend Singer 774 Replacement Broken

Singer Stylist 774, Hook Shaft Gear Replacement?

I have a Singer Stylist 774 with a broken hook shaft gear (missing teeth). I have the replacement gear but am having trouble replacing it. When I place the replacment gear on the vertical shaft it engages but when I tighten the set screws to hold it onto the shaft, the mechanism binds. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.
