Conia M610 Remote Control problem?

Hi,

I've just bought a Conia M610 but even with brand new batteries I need to hold the remote directly in front of the player no more than one or two feet away in order for it to work. The manual says it should work up to 3-4 metres away within a 60 degree angle.

Is this normal for this player? Do others put up with this problem?
