how to adjust the needle placement. the needle hits foot and breaks?

Just got a vintage Singer Stylist model 457. The woman said that the needle hits the foot and it just needed a slight adjustment that would take about 5 minutes to do. Took a look at it tonight and wasn't able to figure it out. Not a seasoned sewer though. Any help?

Hello Leslie,
If the needle bar is not central on the 457 select middle needle position, take the foot off, select straight stitch, take the top off the machine and look at the bar that joins the three position needle lever, ther will be screws on top, slacken the screws off then move the needle bar into the centre of the plate and tighten them up.
