How to fix my Singer 427?

I have a Singer 427 with a broken 'bobbin hook gear', as I believe it's called. The plastic gear at the top of the vertical shaft, which meshes with a similar gear on the main horizontal shaft, has shattered. The same repair was requested by 'Neil' in January and 'RichardW' in July of 2010, by 'drivewithken.' However, the answer and all-important re-timing instructions are not reproduced. Any help would be appreciated.
