handwheel will not screw onto machine?

I have a hand opererated Jones sewing machine, witha round bobbin, sorry no model number or age.The handwheel keeps coming loose from the machine. Takes ages with hit and miss to connect it and a mysterious metal gasket to the machine. Is there a special way of putting the gasket in ?

hi i presume the gasket you talking about is a star shape plate.the high ends should be towards outside of machine pressing against the small inner wheel.this inner wheel should have place for a small screw and when inserted will prevent wheel from turning more than approx 5mm.if this is not the case you can turn the star shape 180 degrees and try again.hope it help
